Objectives To investigate changes in the morbidity, localization and therapy of impetigo. Methods Analysis of the data about impetigo from the Continuous Morbidity Registration of the Department of General Practice of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre and of the data from the Transition Project with surgeries in Friesland and Noord-Holland. Results The prevalence has increased 3-4 times since the period 1985-1990. The cause of impetigo is nowadays most of the time a staphylococcus situated more often on the trunk and extremities then at the face. Many practitioners prescribe oral antibiotics. Conclusions The raise and oral treatment of impetigo lead to more cost and increases the risk of antibiotic resistance.
