Abstract

De Kinkelder A, Broes M, Raeven JMMM, Kimenai I, Schols JMGA. Points of friction in the implementation of palliative care. A practical list of points for the carer’s attention. Huisarts Wet 2007;50(13):695-9. Palliative sedation is becoming more common. In this article we discuss, on the basis of two cases, a few points of friction in palliative care. The points deserving attention that emerge from this investigation are resumed in the Aandachtspuntenkaart palliatieve sedatie. (List of points worthy of attention in palliative sedation). The points of friction correspond partly to the current maximum term of life expectancy, as laid down in the KNMG guidelines. This term is at present 1 to 2 weeks which, in our opinion, is long. We recommend that this term be reduced to a maximum of 1 week. Finally we recommend that a more structured – though not compulsory – consultation should be drawn up to precede the inception of palliative sedation.
