Abstract

General practitioners should have a clearer role and take more responsibility in the management and care of patients with chronic psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Agreement should be reached with mental health care organizations about who is responsible for what. All too often the care of psychiatric patients is disrupted because their management is shifted from one field to the other; this also happens within mental health care organizations.
