The Dutch College of General Practitioners guideline ‘Osteoporosis’ advises the medical management of such pain, but this is insufficient in some patients. This clinical lesson describes two patients with an insufficient response to commonly used pain management regimens in whom vertebroplasty might be justified. The originally positive opinion about this procedure has been put into perspective by two recent studies. Physiotherapy is an alternative treatment option, because new medicines are still in the research phase.
