Düsman H, Reinders ME, Folkers H, Hendrickx E, Ram P. Effect of an intensive course for GP trainees on emergency care. Huisarts Wet 2012;55(1):6-9.
In 2008, the Dutch general practitioner training programme started an intensive, centrally organized course in emergency care (STARtclass) to increase the involvement of trainee general practitioners in A&E departments. This semi-experimental study investigated the effect of the course on the trainees’ knowledge, comparing 23 trainees who had followed the STARtclass course (intervention group) with 29 trainees who had followed the current curriculum (control group). We compared trainees’ scores on the test “emergency care” and on three subtests, emergency care in general practice, general emergency care, and specialist emergency care. The scores of the intervention group were significantly higher than those of the control group. The effect size was large, but became smaller as test questions became less relevant to emergency care.
